U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah found Guilty

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah who has represented parts of Philadelphia and always wore a sharp suit was found guilty on all counts against him, including racketeering, fraud and money laundering.  This Democrat has been in Congress since 1995 and served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Justice Department lawyer Jonathan Kravis said, "Fattah also used federal grants and nonprofit funds to enrich his family and friends."  Prosecutors also charged the congressman in a bribery scheme involving Herbert Vederman, one of Fattah's most prolific fund-raisers.  In addition to Fattah and Vederman, three other people were found guilty on various charges in connection with the schemes.

After being convicted Fattah said,  "This is an extraordinarily difficult day for me and my family," the congressman said in a statement. "A jury has decided that based on the evidence presented to them that I am guilty of charges presented by the government.  Today's decision notwithstanding, it has been my privilege to serve the constituents of the Second Congressional District for over 20 years."

Well, sentencing is scheduled for Oct 4 and Fattah could get 20yrs.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell said,  "Today’s convictions should send a message that the Justice Department will vigorously investigate and prosecute political corruption wherever it takes place, and uphold the principles of honesty and integrity that are the foundation of our government."
